NEOPRENE LATEX MASTIC MEMBRANE

Part 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

A. Work under this section consists of furnishing everything necessary for and incidental to the execution and completion of all Latex Mastic Membranes as indicated on the drawings and specified herein.

B. Related work:

1. Quarry Tile

3. Mortar Bed

4. Thin-Set Mortar

5. Grout

1.02 QUALITY ASSURANCE

 

A. All work performed under this specification shall meet the current standard of care for the items as specified and in conjunction with manufacturers' specification and current Tile Council of America guidelines.

B. Manufacturer of Latex Mastic Membrane shall be regularly engaged in the manufacture of Latex Mastic Membranes for the past ten years and submit a list of at least five projects of equal complexity and scope. Installations submitted shall have been in place for the past five years with no sign of failure.

D. Use only materials from a single manufacturer to ensure

compatibility or as approved in writing by the membrane manufacturer.

E. Qualification of installers:

1. Use only pre-qualified and approved subcontractors employing skilled and experienced workers.

2. Helpers and apprentices used for such work shall be under full and constant supervision at all times by thoroughly skilled installers.

3. In the acceptance or rejection of installed work, no allowance will be made for the lack of skill on the part of the installer.

F. Instructions: Request the service of a representative of the manufacturer for initial instructions in preparation, mixing and application of the materials. The manufacturer shall supply such service as required. Notify manufacturer in writing 30 days prior to requiring his services.

 

1.03 SUBMITTALS

Submit catalog data which includes specification and installation details. Installation instructions and recommendation of manufacturer shall be specified for this application. No product shall be accepted unless material has a current ICC-ES listing.

 

1.04 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

A. Deliver materials to the project site in manufacturers' unopened, undamaged, original packaging.

B. Store materials on site in enclosures or under protective covering that assure materials are kept clean and dry.

C. Store material off ground.

 

1.05 JOB CONDITIONS:

A. Environmental Conditions: Work shall be performed within range of temperatures, and in climatic conditions recommended by the manufacturer.

 

Part 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 MATERIALS:

A. Latex Mastic Membrane shall be Mer-Krete HydroGuard 2000 Membrane as manufactured by Mer-Krete Systems/ Mer-Ko Materials a division of Parexlahabra Inc. Torrance California 800/ 851-6303 ICC-ES # ER-5487 LA City RR # 4321

B. The composition when properly applied and cured should exhibit the following physical characteristics and properties:

 

1. The membrane shall elongate a minimum of 500%.

2. The membrane shall withstand a water head of 115 ft. for a period of sixty minutes without water transmission or rupture of the membrane.

3. The minimum thickness of the membrane shall be 30 mils.

4. Elongation over crack .22 inches (Split Slab Test).

5. Adhesion in shear 250 psi or greater.

6. Tensile 450 psi

7. Tile Adhesion to membrane: using Mer-Krete Latex 200, or Mer-Krete 710 Series Thinset Mortars (ANSI A118.4) method in excess of 500 psi

8. Freeze Thaw cycle after cure - 250 cycles. No Change (M/K A-223 ) method.

9. Membrane shall be ICC-ES Listed and meet ANSI A-118.10 Standard.

 

C. Joint Backing: closed cell polyethylene.

D. Sealant: Single or two component urethane per TCA requirements.

PART 3 EXECUTION:

3.01 VERIFYING SURFACE CONDITIONS

A. Inspection

1. Prior to commencement of work, carefully inspect the installed work of other trades and verify that all such work is complete to the point where this installation may properly commence.

2. Verify that this work may be installed in accordance with all pertinent codes and regulations, the original design, and the referenced standards.

B. Discrepancies:

1. In the event of discrepancy, immediately notify the Architect, General Contractor or his agent.

2. Do not proceed with installation in areas of discrepancy until all such discrepancies have been fully resolved.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. This membrane shall be installed in strict accordance with the manufacturers' printed specifications, and the most current requirements of the Tile Council of America guide lines.

1. Mud bed installation over wood subfloor shall be Mer-Krete Underlay-M installed in conjection with 2x2x2 welded lath sloped to drain. Miniun slope 1/4" per foot. Contact manufacturer for specific details.Membrane waterproofing shall be installed over mortar bed and latex as described below.

2. The waterproof membrane shall be applied to all flat areas using synthetic asphalt modified neoprene latex mastic, and synthetic reinforcement cloth (Type ll). Two coats of rubber shall be applied to a total thickness of 30 mils by laminating wet mastic into cloth making certain the mat is saturated at the prescribed thickness. All vertical, base and edges shall be flashed in the same manner. A second coat of rubber must be applied to fill all pin holes.

3. For thin-set application, adhesive shall be Mer-Krete 200 Latex with 211 Filler, or Mer-Krete Thin-Set 710 Mortar* as manufactured by Mer-Ko to ensure compatibility and meeting ANSI A-118.4 Standards. All grout, mortar mixes and fillers shall be approved in writing by the manufacturer or as outlined in manufacturers' specifications.

3.03 FLOOD TEST:

A. After a minimum cure time of 72 hours, give each cavity a 24 hour flood test. Plug any drains to contain the water. Notify Architect, General Contractor, owners agent and manufacturer of the membrane no less than 72 hours prior to performing test.

 

3.04 PROTECTION:

A. After successful completion of the flood test, waterproof membrane covering shall be adequately protected by the prime contractor against damage or misuse by other trades until final acceptance of the building.

 

3.05 WARRANTY:

A. Warranty material and workmanship to the owner insuring performance of the waterproof membrane system is per manufacturers' specifications and all work has been performed to meet all applicable industry standards and as per standard of care issues for the industry involved. Warranty shall be -5- years material and labor.**
