DESCRIPTION:

Mer-Krete Sound Shield 7000 is a fiber reinforced rubber sound suppressing mat and crack isolation membrane incorporating a polyester fabric layer on each side to enhance adhesive strength. Sound Shield 7000 is produced in 42" x 48" sheets @ 1/8" thickness. Weight is approximately .75 lb/sq ft.

USE:

Mer-Krete Sound Shield 7000 is most commonly used as a sound reducing barrier between concrete or plywood sub-floors and hard surface overlayments such as tile, stone and hardwood flooring. IIC ratings range from 53 to 63 depending on floor system.

Sound Shield 7000

ADVANTAGES:

  • Easy to handle sheets eliminates curled edges.
  • Engineered surfaces provide enhanced bonding.
  • Adheres to all common sound substrates.
  • Made from recycled materials reducing landfill usage (meets LEED requirements).
  • Reduces both airborne and impact sound transference.
  • Helps reduce overlay cracks due to sub-floor movement (ANSI A118.12).
  • Meets ASTM E1007 requirements.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

No sealers, curing compounds or coatings shall be used on the substrate. Surfaces shall be left clean. Any contaminants shall be removed prior to application. Patching, leveling or areas requiring a mortar bed should be prepared using Mer-Krete Underlayments.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Mer-Krete Thin-Set 801 is a new proprietary hybrid formulation developed for use in installations of non-porous tiles over sound mats, waterproof and crack isolation membranes as well as any other non-absorptive surfaces. Unlike regular thin-sets, all the water is hydrated within the Thin-Set 801 system rather than requiring evaporation. When installed with Sound Shield 7000 and porcelain or other non-porous overlays, Thin-Set 801 is warranted to completely cure in 48 hours.

INSTALLATION:

Work should be performed only by a trained applicator and in strict accordance with ANSI A-108.5 methods and manufacturer application specifications, abbreviated below: Mix Mer-Krete 801 thin set with approximately 1 gal to 1 1/4 gal of cool clear water per 50# bag to a smooth paste like consistency. Use a 1/4" notched trowel and spread only the amount that can be covered in 15 minutes. If material skims over on the floor, re-trowel as long as material remains tacky, if dried out, remove from floor and discard. When spreading thin set, comb in one direction. Place one edge of Sound Shield mat on the floor and roll down into the thin set (roll perpendicular to the troweled ridges of the thin set). Leave a 1/4" gap around room or any protrusions and fill with an acoustical caulking material. Move the mat back and forth perpendicular to the thin set ridges. A 75 lb. roller is recommended to help flatten out the mat. If any thin set extends out between the edges of the mat, either scrape off the excess or take the flat edge of a trowel and strike the thin set flat with the mat.
