3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
BASIC USE
Sound Shield PNS 40 consists of a 40-mil thick rubberized asphalt membrane. A heavy film is laminated on the face of the sheet and a siliconized, removable release sheet on the adhesive side. The system includes a specialty formulated PrepSeal PNS primer. The factories controlled thickness assures uniform thickness on the job

USES
Mer-Krete Sound Shield PNS 40 can be used under thin set mortar or mortar beds for ceramic tile and natural stone for floors in interior and exterior applications. It is recommended for use over properly prepared masonry, concrete, cement backer board, and existing ceramic tile. In interior dry areas, it is suitable for gypsum board, oriented strand board and plywood substrates. Sound Shield PNS 40 is suitable for both residential and commercial construction.

LIMITATIONS
Do not use Sound Shield PNS 40 below 40ºF (4ºC) or above 95ºF (35ºC). Use caution; do not allow PrepSeal PNS primer to freeze. Not recommended in areas where membrane will be subject to continuous exposure to sunlight. Do not apply primer or membrane to frozen concrete or damp, frosty or contaminated surface. Optimum results are obtained when membrane is installed at temperatures over 40 deg. F and below 100 deg. F. Not recommended as a pond or tank liner. If waterproofing is required; use Mer-Krete’s Hydro-Guard membrane. Impervious tile (less than 0.5% absorption) may require a 48-hour cure time prior to grouting of tile. The mortar will be sandwiched between to non-absorptive materials and will require additional cure time. Cooler weather will also increase the cure time of the mortar. Not recommended for use over sealants containing coal tar. In the event of existing bitumen modified materials, consult the Mer-Krete technical representative. Not for use over expansion or movement joints and out of plane movement cracks. Not recommended for use on concrete floors when hydrostatic pressure is present. Perimeter expansion of 1/4" minimum must be maintained for warranty.

4. TECHNICAL DATA
APPLICABLE STANDARDS
Mer-Krete’s Sound Shield PNS 40 meets or exceeds industry requirements ANSI A118.12

5. INSTALLATION
SURFACE PREPARATION

All surfaces must be between 40ºF (4ºC) to 95ºF (35ºC) and structurally sound (deflection not to exceed 1/360 of the span), dry clean and free from oil, grease, wax, paint, old adhesives, sealers and curing compounds. Any contaminates which inhibit proper bond must be removed. Substrate preparation should be completed following ANSI A108 AN-2 “General Requirements for Subsurfaces”. All substrates should be plumb and true, surface deviation should not exceed 1/4" in 10'. Patching, leveling or areas requiring a mortar bed should be prepared using Mer-Krete’s Underlayments. Movement (Expansion) joints should be provided to comply with TCA method EJ 171.

Cement Substrates
All concrete substrates should be cured a minimum of 28 days. Smooth steel troweled floors should be roughed up using mechanical chipping, scraping or shot blasting. Dampen porous or dry concrete previous to installation of tile. Do not leave puddles or standing water.

Cement Backer Board
Follow cement board manufacturer’s instructions.

Plywood and OSB Substrates
Maximum joist spacing should be 16" on center. Plywood should be exterior grade only. Maintain a gap of 3/16" between plywood underlayment sheets edges and all that abut walls, columns, posts and adjacent sheets. All plywood installations should be interior areas only and protected from exposure to moisture. Stir PrepSeal PNS primer thoroughly. Apply by spray or with a long nap roller at 250-300 sf. per gallon. Allow a minimum of one hour to dry.

APPLICATION
Apply sheets horizontally over primed surfaces. End seems shall be butt jointed. For a wrinkle-free application, snap a chalk line for a starting point. Pull 2"-3" of release paper and place adhesive side of membrane along chalk line. As the roll is dispensed, simultaneously roll along the chalk line. Immediately after installation, roll the top of the membrane with a carpet roller.

REPAIRS
Following application, inspect all membrane for tears, punctures, fishmouths, air bubbles or voids due to misalignment at seams. Remove damaged membrane. Prime exposed concrete and allow bonding agent to dry. Apply a new section of the sheet membrane to primed surface, extending into adhered membrane 6" on all sides. Firmly press repair section to ensure a good seal.

CERAMIC OR STONE TILE APPLICATION
Ceramic or stone tile can be installed immediately after the application of the Sound Shield PNS 40 membrane. Mer-Krete recommends a quality latex Portland cement thin set like Mer-Krete Systems: 705, 710, 7d10, 720, 750, and 801 mortars. Follow the directions on thin set container for proper application.

PROTECTION / SAFETY
PrepSeal PNS primer contains latex and may cause skin injury. Avoid contact with skin where possible. Wash exposed skin areas promptly with water. If primer gets in the eyes, rinse immediately and repeat rinsing for at least 15 minutes. Get prompt medical attention.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
